Jobs are sparse on the ground and it’s a hard battle to make yourself seem better than the hundreds of other applicants. Applying for jobs can be a depressing feeling because, more often than not, you’ll never hear back and months can go by without any form of positivity. But don’t worry, because there are plenty of ways to keep you busy while you network for a new job. Here are some of the best ways to find jobs, get yourself out there and become as visible as possible.
Social media
It’s a new world out there. Technology has taken over our lives and, if you’re not part of the social scene online, then you’re really not reaching out to all employers. Twitter is a great way of networking because it allows you to find people in the sector you want to work in and show off what you’re all about. Likewise, many companies put their new jobs on Twitter, so you can be in the loop for when there are vacancies. It should go without saying that you should keep at least the front page of your tweets clean, and consider updating your bio to appeal to the hiring managers.
Another cracking social media site is LinkedIn. This is like a Facebook for business professionals. You get to basically put yourself in a shop window, network with companies and add the relevant recruiters as friends. It’s a fantastic way to get yourself out there and connect to the important people you need to see.
Be persistent
Fancy a job at a top company? Who doesn’t? But jobs will probably be thin on the ground, so you need to make sure you’re aware as soon as any jobs come available. Checking the same website every day for a job sounds boring, but by being persistent you could just land that job you wanted.
If you’re using the web for your job hunting, email the company and ask them if there are any available jobs. Attach your CV, cover letter and any work you could show off – you never know, they might just be impressed enough to offer you an interview.
Contacts
Think about who you know. Are there any people in and around your friend network who could help you into a better job at their workplace? Often in business, it’s who you know, not what you know, so take advantage of your contact list and get asking. The worst that could happen is that they say they can’t help you. It’s got to be worth a try.
Take advantage of every opportunity.
If all else fails, place your CV on every job site there is. Literally, get your hands on every opportunity. Making sure employers know you’re there could just be the way forward to get that job. And while you’re likely to get quite a few no’s, it only takes one yes to achieve a new direction in life. Stay persistent, do what it takes and you’ll get there.
If all else fails…
If you’ve exhausted all your internet job hunting expertise, why not take the old-fashioned route and get out there with plenty of copies of your CV and hand them in to (relevant) businesses. You get the opportunity to show the employers just how keen you are, plus you will feel like you’ve at least achieved something with your day by being pro-active.
